Greening UNDP Moonshot

Committing to 50% carbon footprint reduction by 2030

UNDP is committed to being green, sustainable, and just. To stay within a 1.5°C increase in global warming – which is needed to avoid catastrophic impact of climate change – greenhouse gas emissions must halve by 2030 and be reduced to net-zero by 2050. We lead on climate action by example. In August 2019, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner launched the ‘Greening Moonshot’, committing the Organization to reduce its operational carbon footprint by 50% by 2030.

Our approach to corporate climate action:

WE MONITOR WE REDUCE WE OFFSET
Monitoring our carbon footprint consistently is essential to track progress towards our Moonshot targets. Therefore, all UNDP offices report their data annually via the Environmental Management Tool (EMT). Results are reported as part of the UN-wide Greening the Blue report. The Greening Moonshot is all about taking action. Corporately, the Moonshot Facility supports the needed transformation to energy efficient buildings and to electric vehicles. Many UNDP offices have also adopted their own greening plans and success stories are everywhere. But… what makes the real difference in UNDP is its people. Across the Organization, no matter the situation in countries, UNDP staff are fully on board to build forward better. Offsetting where emissions cannot be reduced complements UNDP’s greening efforts and demonstrates our commitment to adhere to highest standards of accountability. Every year, UNDP purchases Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) from the Adaptation Fund established under the Kyoto Protocol of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
